Ban on small bottles of water

Reasons: trash threatens the island Bali - litter-free by 2027 What's next?

A total ban on the production, sale and distribution of plastic bottles smaller than 1 liter will come into effect in Bali from January 2026. The decision was part of Governor Wayan Koster's environmental program to combat litter on the island. He has instructed manufacturers including Aqua, Cleo, Sosro and Coca-Cola to stop production as early as 2025, selling off leftovers by December.

Reasons: trash threatens the island

Overflowing landfills, polluted beaches and plastic waste that has become an everyday part of the landscape have led to drastic measures. Plastic bottles of up to 1 liter make up a significant proportion of litter in Bali. The authorities emphasize that such pollution threatens not only the ecology but also the economy: tourists will not return to the dirty island.

Bali - litter-free by 2027

The ban is just one part of a larger initiative, Bali Without Garbage by 2027. In addition to eliminating small plastic containers, the island will strengthen recycling, introduce mandatory waste sorting, install refill stations for reusable bottles and limit single-use packaging.

What's next?

Local residents and tourists generally support the decision. Experts emphasize that for the transition to be successful, it is necessary to provide access to alternatives - fountains, filtration systems and glass containers. If properly implemented, Bali can indeed become an example of eco-tourism for the whole country.
